Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Elijah and Moses are important figures that ever lived in the Biblical history before the time of the Christ. Their time and the time of the Christ are completely different and this explains why there is a need to understand the old covenant vs new covenant. For the old covenant, every agreement made between God and humankind was based on physical promises. Speaking to the nation of Israel in the book of Exodus, God tells His children that they would be His treasured possession if they obey Him and follow His commands. According to the agreement between God and the children of Israel, circumcision was physical. In the book of Genesis, God talked to Abraham and told Him that He would have to keep an agreement with Him to circumcise all the male persons in his household. God told Moses that any alien who wanted to take part in the Passover feast must be ready to circumcise all the male members of his households before taking part in the Passover feast.
At the time, people did not have the spirit of the Lord because God had not sent the Holy Spirit to come to the world. People used to live by the law and not by the spirit of God. When God called Moses on Mount Sinai, He have him the Ten Commandments, which would guide people in their daily lives. God Himself speaks to Joshua and tells him that the books of the law should never depart from his mouth.
The way you ask God for forgiveness today completely different from how people did it a long time ago. Back then, one has to make a sacrifice when they sinned against God to have their sins atoned for. Once the sacrifice was made by the priest on behalf of the sinner, the person who did wrong would automatically be forgiven and free from the wrath of God.
The new covenant is a different one and right from the moment Christ stepped foot on the earth to the time He left, everything happened in a different way. You need to remember that the covenant between God and man here is spiritual. God loved the world so much that he decided that He would redeem many from their sins. The only way to do this was to give his only son to die for the sins of many.
The Holy Spirit of God came at the time when Jesus already brought the new covenant. When it was his time to go back to the father in heaven, he said that the father would send a helper who would lead people. The Holy Spirit and teach them more than what Jesus had taught them. He would be a teacher and someone that guides people in the right ways of life.
There is no more asking for the forgiveness of sin by making a bull sacrifice because Jesus died on the cross to save humankind. The blood he shed on the cross was for all people. Today, you can ask for the forgiveness of sin through Christ Jesus.
