Origin And Facts Concerning Dentists

By Marci Nielsen

Dentistry as a field of medicine involves the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of all diseases that oral cavities are affected with. The names dentists or dental surgeons are used to refer to specialists in the field. In Coppel, TX, dental surgeons work with a team of other professionals during various medical procedures. The team varies in size and all members have specialty in different subfields of dentistry.

First humans performed dentistry in the Middle Age. In both France and China, barbers are considered to be the first group of human beings to perform dental care practices. The barbers of the time were classified into two groups as guild and lay barbers. Guild barbers had more education and training that their counterparts, which led to lay barbers being prohibited from practicing surgery of oral cavity 1530 and 1575.

Dentistry during Middle Age was crude and backward. Improvements were made to yield modern dentistry, attributed to Pierre Fauchard of France. Prevalence of dentistry in the US started in the 1840s, a time when learning institutions were set up and professional organizations formed. Degree courses started being offered in academic institutions right about the same time and growth continued massively.

Becoming a dentist is a long process that involves a lot of academic work. Preparation should start straight from high school where aspirants should take courses that are related to the field. Examples of such courses include general biology, chemistry, physics, and statistics. After high school, one should complete another four years to earn a bachelor degree. Students who have shown exceptional academic performance may be accepted into dental schools after three years of college only, but that happens rarely.

When choosing a degree to pursue to earn a bachelor degree, one should not confine their choice to those that are related to dentistry. It is however better that the degree be related to medicine. First and second years at dental schools involved medicine-related courses, which makes medicine-related courses advantageous. Applications can be sent to dental schools after graduating from college.

Those that get a chance to enter law school undertake four years of study. Usually two kinds of degree are awarded after four years, and the school attended determines which one. Licensing is a major requirement in all states before a dentist can start practicing. Higher academic qualifications are available for those interested.

Employment for a dentist may be private or public. The choice of whether to open private practices of to get employed is their own. Typically, dental surgeons educate patients on keeping good oral health, assess treatment options, and examine patients. The law requires patients to be told all treatment options available before being treated.

These professionals are required to maintain dental records of the patients they serve at all times. Those that hold management posts get involved in the recruitment, training, and management of staff members. Dental surgeons tasked with management also handle budget-related issues and keep a stock of available equipment.
